Default Closed bank account making a payment

Last year I closed an account with a bank.

I have just received a letter from the bank to say that an annual membership has just been paid on the Debit Card for the closed account and the money has been taken out of an old joint account which has never been closed.

How can a bank make payment on an Debit card when the account is closed and then take payment out of another account without agreement?

I didn't think they could. I would dispute it!

I'd certainly dispute it, and aggressively too... but I hate to say nothing with banks is a surprise.

This would make me hopping mad if it was me.

Not quite the same but a few years ago I phoned up a credit card company for a settlement balance for my card which I paid and they closed the account - 6 months later a bill landed on my mat for about £300 i think which was supposedly interest still owed on the card. They had made a mistake as they were transfering between systems and that was the interest due during the changeover period....
