Question Work Experience / Volunteers

Hi there
I was wondering if anyone knows the legal issues around having people in on a work experience / volunteer basis.

Basically, I've been approached by a number of people (usu. students) who want to do work experience with me. I am happy to have people come in as there are loads of things to do like research, phone calls etc. that I don't have time for. It helps them cos they can put something down on their CV, and it helps me with my workload.

I don't want to exploit people - obviously! I'm a nice guy ;-) - but I could really use the extra pair of hands.

Does anyone have any experience in this area, and does anyone have any advice???

All thoughts appreciated!

Having people on "work on experience" and "volunteers" legally are classed as employees and must be treated as such under workplace health and safety Legislation.

Treat them exactly as if they are one of your own employees and you won't go far wrong.

If you are unsure on any point send me a PM and i'll be more than happy to help.

And the education authority will want to check your insurance, and probably see your health and safety policy.
