We are getting lots of telephone calls from students looking to do the above at our shop. What insurances etc would we need in place to allow this ?

I think you need to talk to your provider for employers liability insurance and mentions specifically what minor age groups you will take on for work experience and they will prob ask questions like whether you have a written H&S policy etc. You would also prob need to meet with work experience co-ordinator before they let people come and work with you and you get a whole pack of stuff including things like CRB checks, risk assessments for making a cup of tea etc.

also if they will be in a vehicle as part of work experience you need to talk to vehicle insurers again to have the cover included specifically for minors.

I am responsible for our work experience program

the best people to speak to are connexions or your local education authority

They will come out and do an assesment on your workplace and ensure you have everything in place before they allow you to accept students

I used to do this a lot and they really know their stuff and as they want to get kids work experience they will really try to help you and get the right stuff in place.

Right about the Insurance, and make sure that the company organising the work experience declare any medical needs of the students, learn from a poor experience I had
