Default Self Assessment - Deadline Change!

If you filed your self assessment the day you got it with a mental note to yourself to fill it in while the Christmas turkey was digesting, think again!

Unless you complete it online (assuming that HMRC's site has not crashed) you will need to have it back by October!

No real issue there, but I wonder how many people will be caught out by this (as far as I am aware) unannounced change of deadline and be in for the instant £100 fine!?

I've known about it for ages - at least since last year sometime...

As with most reporting requirements to HMRC it is the individuals or companies responsibility to file in time, not theirs. A cop out by HMRC but that is their view.

To be fair, it IS explained on the front page of the tax return.

That's what they are banking on, hoping to raise £100 from each unwary person.

It's just typical of the kind of sneaky tricks they pull, like sending out demands for fines for not returning a P35 to companies with no payroll. If you don't appeal within the requisite 30 days, you've lost. Even if you have never operated PAYE and repeatedly told them that. According to my accountant they catch a fair few each year.

Blame the man at the top - a stealth tax regime will include a stealth fine regime.

Exactly why I started the thread. Glad most of you knew, but if this thread helps one person avoid a £100 fine, it was worth starting!

Well unless we get a seismic shift in exchange rates, I think you will succeed.

Anyone ever noticed that they paint the underside of post office vans? Why do they do that?
