Default What options are there for working at home?

    Hi,
My wife is due to go back to work in November after taking a year out to look after our son, (first child) Jacob.

She has been thinking about working from home after a friend told her about a job filling letters in to envelopes or something.

Does anyone have any experience of doing this kind of work? What is the pay like per hour?

Are there other jobs she could consider doing?

Any advice or comments is welcome.

    Many Thanks
    JD

That sort of work is usually a scam....the bit they don't tell you is that you have to find the names and addresses to send them to. Avoid and look at other opportunities.Consider what hours she can definitely commit, does she have transport, phone, internet or whatever is required as necessary, and look at what skills or transferable skills she has and what she enjoys doing. Come up with a list that meets those factors for starters and work from there.

There aren't many options for working from home as an employee, but you could try the following websites (sorry, I'm not allowed to post links yet because I'm new, but you should be able to find them easily by Googling):

    Mum and Working
    Flexible Skills Bank
    Working Mums

Simple rule, if they ask for up front payments of any kinds....run away.

Why not sit and reflect on what you are good at? You never know, there may be a business in you

Lifestyle businesses are a quick and easy way to open up the doors on a new horizon...

    Good luck

I see these adverts posted everywhere for this kind of work.

On the contrary, I know of many small businesses who use friends, family and contacts to do administration work and remove the labour from what takes their own staff ages.

Do check it out in full.

Dropshipping is always a good option. Its where you dont hold any stock and have items delivered direct to the customer from the dropshipping company

Writing content for people is always going to be a winner. Goto sites like scriptlance and the such and bid on some content projects to write (if she has the skills to write)

The only trouble I can see is when the little one starts walking and roaming the house, its terribly distracting working on a PC, you cant have eyes everywhere.

Working at home on a PC is horrible. I don't know who does it. But I have done it. It is the worst thing in the world.

There are a million and one home based businesses to earn pin money. Doing computer work at home is awful. IT's okay the odd evening when you have to. But not regular. My opinion.

And how do you manage your "project" then?

    Carrier pigeon and smoke signals?

Go rent an office if you wish guys, but make sure you notice the difference in your overheads thus your service price will rocket

The point of this thread, is that the OPs wife has a young baby to mind, and I therefore presume wants to work from home and do somehting that can be done whilst baby sleeps, just to earn a small income and keep her mind occupied and something else to think about apart from when the next feed or nappy change is due. Been there and done that so I understand.

It really depends what skills or transferable skills she has, what resources are available and work from there.
